Once upon a time, Bill was a founding member of the groundbreaking country-folk band Cowboy, an early Capricorn Records band, signed to the label at the insistence of Duane and Gregg Allman, who had played
and jammed with various members in their early days. Cowboy opened for the likes of the Allman Brothers Band, Alex Taylor, and headlined shows up and down the east coast in the early 70's. Bill's contributions as a songwriter were paramount to their artistic success. Noted albums are "Reach for the Sky" and the critically acclaimed "Five'll Getcha Ten".
His craftsmanship has not faded over the years, but has evolved as the inevitabilities of life change us all. Today, his songs seem to combine the backwards-looking introspection of Jackson Brown with John Prine's clever turn-of-phrase, and in a way that is not at all imitative. And all this time, Bill knows intuitively that the music must never be slave to the lyrics, no matter how strong they may be.
In fact, it is strongly suggested that you listen to "Look In, Look Out" at least twice. When you drive away in the morning, put it in your CD player and let the visceral melodies win you over. When you get home, play it on your stereo-preferably with the headphones on-and carefully listen to the lyrics. Both experiences will be as profound as they are enjoyable.
His debut solo album, "Look In Look Out" has already made waves on NPR's nationally syndicated show "Car Talk". Wonderful blend of uptempo toe tappers and soft, introspective ballads. Bill Pillmore brings together a beautiful blend of sounds with fellow musicians Craig Barnette (Mofro, Donavon Frankenreiter), Linda Minke, Farris Nix (Jess Pillmore, 3), Dan Phelps (Tori Amos, Organica) and Jess & Jo Pillmore.
As an engineer, Bill just finished the latest cd, “Truth Stained Lies” by fellow RoadWorm artist, Ron Morris. Other RoadWorm cds he’s engineered including his own “Look In Look Out” are “Boyfriend and Other Sides of Love” & “Speak True” (Ron Morris), “Ghosts of Eden” (Mark Williams), “PROMO” & “Slightly Skewed” (Jess Pillm0re), along with many other indie releases.
Currently, Bill’s in the studio writing more songs and recording Jesse James & the Junkman’s Daughter’s debut cd. Out of the studio, you can find him playing pedal steel with the high energy americana band. And if that wasn’t enough, he refinishes high-end acoustic guitar. Just like the title of his solo debut, “Look In, Look Out”, he explores music from every angle.
